This enormous monument in South Dakota is intended as a tribute to the great Sioux warrior, as a counterpoint to nearby Mount Rushmore, which of course depicts the images of four European American presidents. Work on the Crazy Horse Monument was begun in 1948. As funding is completely through admission charges and private donations, the work has proceeded very slowly over the years.
